- Engineers held about 1.5 million jobs in the U.S. in 2002.
- Of these, about 192,000 engineers were employed by Federal, state, and local governments.
- About 88,000 of these engineers worked for the Federal Government, mostly for the Departments of Transportation, Defense, the Interior, Energy, and Agriculture, and for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
- Electrical and electronics engineers held the most positions; 19.8% of U.S. engineers were in this field in 2002.
- Approximately 55,000 engineers reported self-employment in 2002; most of them were consultants.
- Environmental Engineering is expected to grow much faster than the average for the 2002-2012 period.
